Think you found a great deal on a yacht charter? Think again. That “starting at” price you see online is almost never what you’ll actually pay, and here’s why.
Caribbean Yacht Charters: The Per-Guest Pricing Trap
In the Caribbean, charter rates for catamarans are often based on just 2 guests. If you’re booking a 10-person yacht for a full group, the total cost will be significantly higher. Most catamaran rates are scaled based on the number of guests, so the more people onboard, the more you’ll pay.
Power Yachts: Don’t Forget the APA
If you’re eyeing a motor yacht, keep in mind that the base rate typically doesn’t include the APA (Advanced Provisioning Allowance). APA is an estimate. It usually ranges from 35–40% of the base rate and covers expenses such as fuel, food, drinks, and dockage. This can add tens of thousands of dollars to your charter cost.
Mediterranean Yacht Charters: Low Season Pricing + VAT
In the Mediterranean, “starting at” usually refers to the low-season rate, typically for May or October. If you’re traveling in peak season (June–September), expect significantly higher rates. On top of that, you’ll pay:
- VAT (Value-Added Tax): Ranges from 5% to 24%, depending on the country
- APA: Again, typically 25–40% of the base rate to cover onboard expenses
The Bottom Line: Expect to Pay More Than the Advertised Rate
While “starting at” prices may look appealing, they rarely reflect the final cost. Between seasonal rate increases, guest-based pricing, taxes, and provisioning fees, your total can climb quickly.
