Planning a summer yacht charter in Greece, Croatia, Italy, France or Spain? In addition to choosing the right yacht and itinerary, travelers will soon have a new pre-departure requirement to consider: ETIAS.
ETIAS—the European Travel Information and Authorisation System—is expected to begin operating during the last quarter of 2026. Once implemented, many travelers who currently visit Europe without a visa, including United States citizens, will need to obtain an ETIAS travel authorization before departing for participating European countries.
ETIAS is not currently accepting applications, and the European Union has not yet announced its exact launch date. If you are planning a Mediterranean yacht charter, there is nothing to apply for yet but it is important to understand what is coming.
What Is ETIAS?
ETIAS is an electronic travel authorization for travelers from countries that currently enjoy visa-free access to much of Europe. It is similar in concept to the ESTA authorization used by the United States.
ETIAS is not a visa. The application will be completed online, and most applications are expected to be processed within minutes. Once approved, the authorization will be electronically linked to the traveler’s passport.
ETIAS is scheduled to begin in the last quarter of 2026. The exact launch date will be announced by the European Union before the system becomes operational.
Will Americans Need ETIAS for a European Yacht Charter?
Yes. Once ETIAS becomes operational, United States passport holders traveling to participating European countries for a short stay will generally need an approved ETIAS authorization.
This includes many of the most popular Mediterranean yacht charter destinations:
- Greece
- Croatia
- Italy
- France
- Spain
- Portugal
- Malta
- Cyprus
- Monaco, when entered through France
- The Balearic Islands, including Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca
- Corsica
- Sardinia and Sicily
ETIAS will apply to travelers visiting 30 European countries for stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
Every traveler will need an individual authorization, including children. Parents or guardians can complete applications on behalf of minors.
When Does ETIAS Start?
As of August 2026, ETIAS is not yet operational and applications are not being accepted.
The European Union currently expects ETIAS to launch during the last quarter of 2026. An exact start date has not yet been announced.
Travelers should be careful with websites claiming that they can already issue an ETIAS authorization. The only official source is the European Union’s ETIAS website at europa.eu/etias.
How Much Will ETIAS Cost?
The ETIAS application fee is expected to be €20 per traveler.
Travelers under 18 and over 70 will generally be exempt from paying the application fee, but they will still need an ETIAS travel authorization.
Commercial companies may offer to submit applications on behalf of travelers and may charge additional service fees. To avoid unnecessary charges and protect your passport and payment information, we recommend applying through the official European Union website or mobile application once the system opens.
How Long Will ETIAS Be Valid?
An approved ETIAS authorization will normally be valid for three years or until the passport used for the application expires—whichever comes first.
During that period, it can be used for multiple trips to participating European countries. However, ETIAS does not extend the amount of time a traveler may remain in the Schengen Area.
Most visitors will still be limited to a combined total of 90 days during any 180-day period.
If you renew or replace your passport, you will need to obtain a new ETIAS authorization because the approval is electronically connected to the passport used in the application.
When Should Yacht Charter Guests Apply?
Although most ETIAS applications are expected to be approved quickly, travelers should not wait until the day of departure.
Some applications may require additional documentation or review. The European Union advises travelers to apply well in advance because processing could take several days—and potentially longer if an interview or additional information is required.
For yacht charter guests, we recommend checking ETIAS requirements as soon as flights are confirmed and applying well before final preference forms and crew documents are due.
The name, passport number and other information on the ETIAS application must match the traveler’s passport exactly.
What Passport Requirements Apply to a European Yacht Charter?
ETIAS does not replace the need for a valid passport.
For most short visits to participating European countries, a traveler’s passport should:
- Be valid for at least three months after the intended date of departure
- Have been issued within the previous 10 years
- Match the passport information entered on the ETIAS application
- Remain valid for the entire trip
We generally recommend having at least six months of passport validity when traveling internationally. This provides an additional buffer if an itinerary changes, a flight is delayed or another country is added to the trip.
Before departure, check every guest’s passport—including children’s passports. A yacht charter contract or crew preference form does not override government entry requirements.
What Is the EES, and Is It the Same as ETIAS?
No. ETIAS and the Entry/Exit System, commonly called EES, are two different systems.
ETIAS is a travel authorization that eligible visa-exempt travelers will obtain online before beginning their journey.
EES is the electronic system used at European external borders to register non-EU travelers. It records passport information, facial images, fingerprints, and entry and exit details. The EES became fully operational at participating external border crossings in April 2026.
Travelers do not submit a separate EES application. Registration takes place as part of the border-entry process.
In simple terms:
- ETIAS is completed before travel.
- EES is handled when crossing the external border.
- Eligible travelers may be subject to both systems.
Yacht charter guests should allow sufficient connection time at their first European airport, particularly if it is their first trip since EES was introduced.
Does ETIAS Cover Every Mediterranean Yacht Destination?
No. One of the most important considerations for yacht guests is that a Mediterranean itinerary may include countries with different entry requirements.
Greece, Croatia, Italy, France and Spain are among the countries covered by ETIAS. However, other popular yachting destinations—including Turkey and Montenegro—are not part of the ETIAS area.
For example, a Croatia yacht charter that visits Montenegro may involve leaving and later re-entering the Schengen Area. The yacht’s captain and management team will coordinate the vessel’s port clearance, but every guest remains responsible for carrying the correct passport, visa and travel authorization.
Similarly, an itinerary combining the Greek Islands with Turkey crosses an international border. Passport details must be provided to the yacht in advance, and the itinerary must account for customs and immigration clearance.
Requirements can vary according to nationality, residency status and the countries included in the itinerary. Travelers who are not U.S. citizens should confirm whether they require ETIAS, a Schengen visa or another form of authorization.
Does ETIAS Guarantee Entry into Europe?
No. An approved ETIAS authorization permits an eligible traveler to begin their journey, but it does not guarantee admission.
A border official can still request evidence that the traveler meets the applicable entry conditions. This may include:
- A valid passport
- Details of accommodations or a yacht charter
- A return or onward airline ticket
- Proof of sufficient funds
- Information about the purpose and length of the visit
Yacht charter guests should keep their embarkation information, yacht name, charter dates and arrival transfer details readily available while traveling.
What Information Will Yacht Charter Guests Need to Provide?
In addition to government entry requirements, every yacht must receive certain guest information before embarkation.
Your charter team may request:
- Full legal name as shown on the passport
- Date and place of birth
- Passport number
- Passport issuing country
- Passport issue and expiration dates
- Nationality
- Flight and arrival information
- Dietary and medical information
- Emergency contact details
This information allows the yacht’s captain and management team to prepare official guest lists, coordinate port clearance and plan for embarkation.
ETIAS applications must be completed separately through the official European Union system. Your yacht’s guest preference form is not an ETIAS application.
European Yacht Charter Entry Requirements Checklist
Before leaving for your yacht charter, every guest should confirm the following:
- Passport is valid for the required period
- ETIAS has been approved, if operational and required
- ETIAS information matches the passport exactly
- Schengen stay remains within the 90-days-in-180-days limit
- Any additional visas required by the traveler’s nationality have been obtained
- Entry rules have been checked for non-ETIAS countries on the itinerary
- Flight, hotel and yacht embarkation information is accessible
- Passport details have been submitted to the charter team
- Copies of important travel documents are stored securely
