About Hanse Explorer
Hanse Explorer is a true expedition yacht in every sense. Built with the highest ice class (1A Super), she is a true go-anywhere yacht, and routinely travels through dense multi-year pack ice. She is equally at home in the remote atolls of the Pacific, where her first rate dive set up allows for true off-grid exploring and generous open deck space is the perfect setting for sunset cocktails.
For those looking to be truly immersed in a destination, Hanse is the perfect choice. Her two longtime captains have worked on the ship for over 10 years, and an expedition guide is standard on every charter. She has a level of expedition expertise and capability that no other expedition yacht has, with a true expedition spirit that permeates everything on board.
Since her launch in 2006, Hanse Explorer has represented the utmost in quality and safety in expedition yachting with superior construction. The original owner, the founder of a large European shipping company, had a vision for a yacht-sized ship seaworthy enough to travel anywhere in the world. He commissioned the well-known German shipbuilder, Fassmer Werft, to build his vision.
Hanse Explorer more than comfortably accommodates up to 12 people in 7 cabins (plus extra crew space for an expedition leader and a dive master). She boasts all the luxuries of a first-class yacht, but her casual, expedition-oriented style will leave you feeling like you’re in the comfort of your own living room. The bar and lounge offer panoramic views and are the heart of the ship’s guest area. Spacious interiors and a cozy atmosphere make for relaxed travels as you float by magnificent scenery. The unseen details such as retractable zero speed fin stabilizers (which reduces the ship’s movements at sea and at anchor but still allow navigation in dense ice), and the heating system, which is equipped with a steam humidifier, greatly increase guests' level of comfort. After a day of exploring the Arctic, there’s nothing like warming up and rejuvenating in the deluxe Finnish sauna or the Jacuzzi on the top deck. Hanse Explorer finds the perfect balance between adventure and relaxation.
Built for maximum efficiency, Hanse Explorer was fashioned for minimal environmental impact. Her MAK diesel engine runs on light marine gas oil only and is modern, reliable, and highly fuel-efficient. She is equipped with a shaft generator, which produces the ship’s electricity while underway and saves considerable amounts of fuel. A reverse osmosis (desalination) plant produces 20 tons of fresh water a day. A Power Take-Home (PTH) System makes it possible to run all three auxiliary engines to generate enough electrical power to run the shaft generator as an electric motor for emergency propulsion. A booster mode makes it possible to increase the power when the ship is encountering heavy ice and needs an extra thrust to break free.

Iris holds a Bachelor's degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management and boasts over 17 years of experience in housekeeping and hospitality services. Her career began on the high seas, working aboard a passenger ship and a residential mega-yacht. After an exhilarating decade, she transitioned to land, taking on the role of Housekeeping Supervisor at a five-star hotel in Makati, Philippines. She
later advanced to a corporate supervisor position, where she was responsible for developing and implementing procedures and guest setups for all pre-opening hotels in the company. After seven years, the allure of the sea beckoned her once again, and Joined us on the Hanse Explorer.

Growing up in Ireland with the wild Atlantic as her backyard, Sasha was practically born with sea spray in her veins and a craving for epic escapades. She stepped onto her first sailboat at 8, and by 9, she was already a regatta regular.
After finishing school, and pursuing a career in hospitality, the sea’s siren lured her back, and she joined she first tallship. A sea gypsy since then, Sasha sailed all over the Baltic and North seas on traditionally rigged ships. Looking for a new challenge, she joined the luxury yachting industry, and spent years sailing the Mediterranean and Caribbean, until adventure beckoned again. An opportunity arose to join the Hanse Explorer which she jumped at.

At 17 Jens seized the rare opportunity to cross from East Germany through the Iron Curtain, joining a cargo vessel in 1984. After earning his degree from Maritime
University in Bremen, he began his career as a Nautical
Officer and was later promoted to Chief Mate. His
aspirations were realized when he embarked on his first expedition ships, the Europa and the Hanseatic, both of which offered worldwide itineraries. Jens's passion for expeditions, love of nature and wildlife, and fascination with the Arctic and Antarctic led him to the Hanse Explorer in 2009. He enjoys photography and cherishes close encounters with wildlife. He currently resides in the beautiful Sedona, Arizona, with his wife and new puppy.

Sergiy was born in Chornomorsk, a city on the Black Sea coast near Odessa, one of the main ports of Ukraine. In his youth he used to be a handball player but at the age of 17 he decided to connect his life with sea and studied at Odessa National Maritime Academy. After completion Sergiy was working on merchant fleet all around the world. In 2023 he had a chance to become part of the Hanse Explorer team and he took this opportunity without having second thoughts. Sergiy is looking forward to discover the most remote places on the planet.

Leo was born in Barquisimeto, Venezuela. He gained experience as a barista and bar tender in different countries, Panama, USA, Spain, Italy and Germany. Inspired by his uncle seaman Leo decided to make a change. 2021 he started to work on board as a dayworker in Central America. He later moved to Europe in order to sail the world onboard European owned yachts. Fortunately, he caught an opportunity and joined Hanse Explorer. On his free time Leo find himself doing sports, specially baseball, jogging and enjoy nature.

Lloyd hails from the vibrant Bigaa, Legazpi City in Albay, Philippines. He set sail on his seafaring adventure at the ripe age of 20. His first vessel was a heavy lift vessel where he completed nine months as a mess steward. Now, he's the galleys secret weapon on the Hanse Explorer, working behind the scenes to ensure that everything runs smoothly. When not at sea, Lloyd is kept busy running his own business back home. His hobbies are playing basketball, video games and reading fiction books.

Lou started his career on a cruise ship as a cruise staff/entertainer on board and decided after two years to move to the housekeeping department. Lou has over 18 years of experience at sea, working on big boats and residential yachts. Having worked for the last two years on land he found Hanse Explorer and joined our team very recently. Lou is father of a girl and a boy, so when on vacation he makes sure to spend as much time as possible with them. He loves to cook, sing, watch movies and tv series in his free time.

Arco set sail on his seafaring journey back in 2015, joining a bulk carrier with the dream of providing a better life for his family. He's been navigating the high seas with his eyes on the prize of becoming a navigation officer. On board Hanse Explorer, Arco is our resident comic and is always ready with a witty comment or joke. His infectious smile and big heart will warm you on the coldest days. He loves to treat the crew to authentic dishes from his home, often accompanied by questionable karaoke. Just follow the trail of off-key singing to find this jolly sailor!
ARCO SAPATUA
Bosun
David started his maritime career in 2016 onboard cargo vessels, where he worked until 2022 and developed his maintenance skills. Then, he swapped cargo for adventure, joining Hurtigruten Expeditions on the MS Maud, mastering the art of tender driving in the Arctic and Norway's majestic fjords. By 2024, he was navigating the icy wonders of South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula with Oceanwide Expeditions on the MV Plancius. David is an adventurous person who enjoys challenges and excitement, especially when driving tenders and zodiacs in remote destinations. Off the clock, you’ll find him zipping down roads on his bike, shooting hoops, and cherishing every moment with his two beautiful kids.

Ivan is from Izmail, Ukraine. He studied for six years in the Odessa National Maritime Academy. In 2020, he took his first steps at sea and hasn’t looked back. Joining Hanse Explorer brought the opportunity of a fresh perspective, new challenges and a deeper appreciation for the seafaring world. Outside of work, he enjoys flying drones and gaming. He also loves football and proudly calls himself an amateur player. More than anything else, his pride and joy is his loving wife, Alina, and their wonderful little son.
