When someone tells me they want to charter a yacht in the Mediterranean, saying "I want beautiful water, great food and amazing scenery" doesn't narrow it down very much.
You can get all three in Croatia, Greece, Italy, Spain and the South of France.
But the experience can be completely different.
Do you want to wake up at a different island every morning? Explore ancient ruins? Have lunch in a tiny waterfront village? Spend the afternoon at a glamorous beach club? Cruise past the Amalfi Coast? Anchor in remote coves only accessible by boat? Or make the yacht part of a bigger luxury vacation centered around shopping, restaurants and nightlife?
Here's how I compare five of the Mediterranean's most popular yacht charter destinations.
Croatia: The Best Combination of Easy Cruising + Things to Do Ashore
Best for: First-time Mediterranean charterers, families, island hopping, historic towns, active itineraries and groups that want a balance of yacht time and shore time. It's also the single best destination in the world for a group of 13+ since it's one of the only destinations with high occupancy yachts.
If someone tells me, "We want to see and do a lot," Croatia is one of the first destinations I consider.
The Dalmatian Coast gives you hundreds of islands and an enormous number of possible anchorages, but unlike some destinations where the islands are primarily about beaches, there are substantial things to explore ashore too. There are historic towns, fortresses, vineyards, national parks, local restaurants and UNESCO World Heritage Sites throughout the region.
One day you might be swimming in a quiet cove.
That afternoon you're walking through a centuries-old stone town.
The next day you're exploring Hvar, visiting a winery or having dinner overlooking the harbor.
A Split-to-Dubrovnik itinerary can incorporate places such as Brač, Hvar, Korčula and Mljet before finishing in Dubrovnik.
What is the water like in Croatia?
The Adriatic can be wonderfully clear and relatively protected, particularly when you're cruising among Croatia's islands. Plus, the islands are close together.
Choose Croatia if: You want one of the best combinations of beautiful water, island hopping, history, culture, food and manageable cruising distances.
Greece: The Ultimate Island-Hopping Destination
Best for: Island variety, incredible food, ancient history, whitewashed villages, beach clubs, snorkeling and guests who want multiple completely different itineraries to choose from.
Saying you want to charter "Greece" is almost like saying you want to charter "the Caribbean."
Which part of Greece?
The Cyclades, Saronic Islands, Ionian Islands and Dodecanese can deliver completely different yacht charter experiences.
The Cyclades
Most Instagram-able. Mykonos. Paros. Naxos. Milos. Whitewashed villages. Blue domes. Dramatic cliffs. Beach clubs. Incredible restaurants.
The Ionian Islands
The Ionian is known for lush scenery and calm waters. If you want a softer, greener, beautiful coves and a generally more relaxed Greek experience, look west toward places such as Corfu, Paxos, Lefkada, Kefalonia and Zakynthos.
The Saronic Islands
For guests starting in Athens who don't want long passages and do want calm water, the Saronic Gulf can be a fantastic option. You can combine places such as Hydra, Napflion, Spetses, Aegina and Poros with short sails.
History and culture
Greece has an obvious advantage if ancient history is important to you. You can combine your charter with archaeological sites, historic towns, temples, monasteries and villages that make going ashore as interesting as being on the water.
Choose Greece if: You want the quintessential Greek island experience—but let your broker help you choose the right part of Greece rather than simply choosing the most famous islands.
Italy: Amalfi Coast – The Yacht as Your Front-Row Seat
Best for: Scenery, food, romance, iconic destinations, honeymooners and guests who want their yacht charter combined with one of Europe's great coastal experiences.
The Amalfi Coast is completely different from Croatia or Greece.
You're not necessarily trying to see as many islands as possible.
Instead, you're often traveling along one of the most famous coastlines in the world.
Positano. Amalfi. Capri. Ischia. Nerano. Sorrento.
You wake up, walk onto deck and one of the world's most recognizable coastlines is sitting in front of you.
The advantage of seeing Amalfi by yacht
The Amalfi Coast is spectacular.
It can also be incredibly crowded on land during summer with traffic, ferries, packed roads and busy towns are part of the reality.
A yacht changes the experience completely.
You can cruise into Positano from the water, swim before lunch, tender ashore for a restaurant reservation and return to your yacht instead of spending hours navigating the roads.
This is about the coastline, food, towns, restaurants and atmosphere, not so much hidden beaches and coves.
Choose the Amalfi Coast if: You want romance, iconic scenery, phenomenal food and glamorous coastal towns and you want to experience them without relying entirely on roads and ferries.
Italy: Sardinia – Completely Different From Amalfi
Best for: Spectacular water, beaches, water toys, luxury, Porto Cervo and guests who want more time on the yacht.
I would almost treat Sardinia as a separate country when comparing charter styles because it is so different from Amalfi. If Amalfi is about looking at the coast, Sardinia is much more about getting into the water.
The Costa Smeralda and surrounding islands offer extraordinary beaches, granite rock formations and clear turquoise anchorages.
And then there's Porto Cervo. This is one of the Mediterranean's great superyacht playgrounds.
You'll find luxury shopping, restaurants, nightlife and some seriously impressive yachts.
Sardinia + Corsica
One of the great advantages of chartering this region is the possibility of incorporating southern Corsica for some French flair.
The Strait of Bonifacio separates Sardinia and Corsica, giving you access to another completely different landscape and culture during the same charter.
Choose Sardinia if: You want the Mediterranean equivalent of a luxury water-focused vacation. Beautiful yachts, incredible swimming, beaches, water toys and a little Porto Cervo glamour mixed in.
Spain: The Balearic Islands – Beach Clubs, Nightlife + Beautiful Coves
Best for: Groups of friends, beach clubs, nightlife, water toys, beautiful anchorages and guests who want relaxation during the day and energy at night.
The Balearics can give you two vacations in one.
During the day, you can anchor in a gorgeous cove, swim, use the toys and spend hours on the yacht.
Then you can go ashore for dinner and nightlife.
Ibiza
Yes, Ibiza has the nightlife it's famous for. But that's only part of it. There are beautiful coves, clear water, restaurants, beach clubs and quieter areas that make Ibiza appealing even if you have absolutely no intention of staying out until 4 a.m.
Mallorca
Mallorca adds another dimension entirely: dramatic coastline, mountains, historic towns, restaurants, beaches and Palma.
So just like Greece, saying "Balearics" doesn't tell me enough.

Choose the Balearics if: You want beautiful water and plenty of yacht time but also care about beach clubs, restaurants and nightlife.
South of France: The Glamour Charter
Best for: Luxury, superyachts, shopping, Michelin-level dining, beach clubs, nightlife and guests who want yachting integrated into the French Riviera lifestyle.
The South of France is probably the least "escape from civilization" charter on this list.
And that's exactly why people love it.
Monaco. Cannes. Antibes. Saint-Tropez.
The yacht becomes your floating luxury hotel as you move between some of Europe's most glamorous destinations.
You can wake up anchored off the coast, spend the afternoon at a Saint-Tropez beach club, return to the yacht to change and then go ashore for dinner.
What about the water?
There are beautiful bays, islands and swimming spots along the Riviera, but if your entire goal is finding the most extraordinary turquoise water in the Mediterranean, I'd put Sardinia, parts of Greece and the Balearics ahead of it.
The South of France wins for a different reason: what happens around the water.
Restaurants. Shopping. Beach clubs. Nightlife. Events. People-watching. Luxury hotels. And some of the biggest yachts in the world.
Choose the South of France if: You want the yacht to be part of a glamorous Riviera vacation rather than an escape from civilization.
So Which Mediterranean Destination Should You Choose?
Here's the simplest way I'd explain it to a client:
Choose Croatia if you want to see and do a lot without spending your entire vacation underway. It's one of the strongest all-around choices for first-time Mediterranean charterers.
Choose Greece if you dream about Greek islands, tavernas, whitewashed villages and ancient history but choose the right island group based on your priorities and time of year.
Choose the Amalfi Coast if food, romance and iconic scenery are more important than finding deserted anchorages.
Choose Sardinia if you want incredible water, beaches, water toys, superyachts and luxury, with the possibility of incorporating Corsica.
Choose the Balearics if you want beautiful anchorages by day and beach clubs, restaurants and nightlife when you go ashore.
Choose the South of France if you want Saint-Tropez, Monaco, Cannes, shopping, restaurants and the full Riviera lifestyle.
The important thing is that we don't just ask, "Where do you want to go?"
We ask, "What do you want to do when you get there?"
Because someone who dreams about jumping off the yacht into turquoise water every morning should probably be sent somewhere very different from someone whose perfect charter includes lunch at a famous restaurant, an afternoon of shopping and cocktails at a beach club.
The yacht matters. The crew matters. But the destination can completely change the experience.
