In his early 20’s Juha bought his first own ship, a derelict wooden schooner and restored her in to sailing conditon. Thus becoming a self-taught wooden boat-builder and an enthusiastic tall ship sailor he later owned several old coastal cargo ships. In between his shipowning career he served as Petty Officer in the Finnish Navy and as Deputy Harbor Master in Helsinki port. After aquring the Anny von Hamburg with his friend and colleague, Captain Juha is now the key figure in the ships maintenance and operation. Captain Juha’s knowledge of the Finnish archipelago is extensive and he knows many hidden local sights and places to visit.
Accommodations
There are yachts, and then there are stories written in timber, wind, and time. Anny von Hamburg belongs firmly to the latter.Launched in 1914 as a pure sailing cargo schooner, she began life under canvas alone, no engine, only the skill of her crew and the pull of the wind. Her maiden voyage to St. Petersburg was interrupted by the outbreak of the First World War, and what followed was a remarkable journey through history: internment by the Czar’s Navy, survival through conflict, damage and recovery, and decades of working life across the Baltic and North Sea.Twice she endured the upheaval of world wars. Twice she was transformed. And yet, what defines Anny von Hamburg today is not what she lost, but what was so carefully restored.Rescued from near-oblivion in 1980, she was painstakingly rebuilt by a passionate owner and returned to her original outward form, her elegant schooner lines once again cutting through the water with quiet authority. Modern amenities were discreetly integrated, while her interiors were handcrafted to an exceptional standard, blending comfort with authenticity in a way few vessels achieve.Today, she sails the Baltic as a rare and compelling charter yacht, one of the last truly authentic tall ships offering a deeply immersive experience of Northern Europe.A week aboard Anny von Hamburg is not simply a charter, it is a journey into another rhythm of life.
