Ryan grew up in Hermanus, a seaside town where he spent most of his time surfing, diving, and fishing. In 2005, he went to study at the prestigious Warwick’s Chef Training School there and went on to work at restaurants locally and in Cape Town. After a year of cooking in London, he came back and completed some yachting courses with his brother. They even sailed a boat from Cape Town to the USA, that’s when he realized he wanted to be a chef at sea.
He went on to get his Grand Diploma from Silwood School of Cookery, and while studying he worked in some of South Africa’s best kitchens. The Test Kitchen by Luke Dale-Roberts, La Colombe, and Nobu. After a stint as a private chef, he jumped into yachting and spent the next 10 years working as a sole chef and head chef on bigger yachts.
In 2019, he opened a restaurant in Hermanus called Perlemoen with a business partner. It did well, but after three years he missed the freedom of yachting, the travel, the adventure, the constantly changing scenery, so he sold his share and got back into the industry. Now, he is back doing what he loves: cooking on the water and chasing the next horizon.
